the most beautiful of them all

Sitting in the plane on my way home to Frankfurt. Clouds underneath – like ocean waves moving slowly, the sun rising slowly in front of us on the horizon, reflected in a slight orange colour in the far distance. I can’t think of a nicer view this morning. In fact we are just leaving the waters and I can now see snowy fields underneath. I admit it’s a rather Candidesque view of the events of the last couple of hours but still it pretty much reflects my state of mind at this very moment. Note to self - fly more often during sunrise

Reading your post, I can almost visualize the whole scene there... :-)

While the eye captures the beauty of the world as described by you, more soothing, I find, is the sudden sense of detachment I feel from the very world I was in a few minutes ago. This sense of mental detachment almost mimics the physical take-off and ascent in to the sky - probably also because I tend to "switch-off" after a while and sleep very peacefully on my flights... :-)

Yes, you are right - in a sense it is detachment. I often first feel energised by the sheer speed at take-off and later the feeling of total transfer of responsibility to the pilot frees up my thoughts and makes me think of all the beautiful things around. Often this leads to a very calm state of mind followed by a "system shut down" and a very peaceful sleep.
